Wedding Dress Alteration Tips

With more and more people handing down wedding dresses through the family, or buying new ones off the internet, wedding dress alterations have never been more in demand. We are all different shapes and sizes, and it’s rare to find a wedding dress off the shelf that fits just right.

Altering something as important as a wedding dress isn’t something we would suggest you do yourself unless you’re very skilled. There are too many variables, and too many things that can go wrong. Altering a pair of pants or a hem is one thing. Altering something that can affect how a complete dress looks is something else.

However, there are some other practical tips that will help you out if you need an alteration. Likewise, if you live in Naples or Bonita you could go see the people at Bonita Springs Alterations.

Timing is Everything

Getting a wedding dress altered too early can cause problems if your size changes. If you leave it too late, the job could be rushed, or not ready on time. The ideal time would be to have the alterations complete at least one week before the big day. This is early enough that any emergency changes can still be made, but not so long that your body changes too much.

Pack Everything

When bringing a wedding dress to a seamstress for an alteration, it’s important to bring other things you might be wearing on the day. That includes shoes, jackets, cardigans, over-shoulder fabrics and anything else that will impact the shape of the dress. We won’t request a full dress-rehearsal, but seeing the dress exactly as it’s going to be on the day is essential for us to get the changes right.

We don’t want to pry, but if you have any special underwear that might impact on the dress, you’re going to have to bring that too. We won’t ask to see it, you’ll just need to have it on underneath while we measure for the alterations.

Who to Use?

Dresses bought off the internet won’t have an alteration as part of the price, and not all boutiques are equipped to make changes. Therefore it’s important to use a company that has experience in wedding dress alterations. It isn’t a straightforward change, it need skill and experience to pull off.

It’s much harder than raising a hem or widening a waistline. Everything has to be planned in advance so the alterations don’t impact on the shape of the dress, or other aspects of the outfit.

Use a company with a history of being able to deliver high quality alterations. This is probably the most important dress you will ever own, so you don’t want to trust it to just anyone.

Wedding dress alterations can take time to do properly, so make sure you give the seamstress enough time to work. Nothing messes up a job like pressure, and nothing spoils wedding planning like more stress. That’s why our first tip was about timing, getting that right is the most important thing of all.
