Obama, top Dems to huddle on way out

(CNN) — Top congressional Democrats will huddle with President Obama Thursday for one last strategy session before lawmakers leave Washington to campaign for their jobs.

As November election season nears, Democrats are dealing with voter anger about lingering high unemployment, two wars and a growing federal deficit.

Earlier this week, Obama had already appeared to be in campaign mode as he addressed a group at a town hall-style meeting in the yard of a home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

At the meeting Tuesday, Obama faced a range of questions but no matter the topic — education, small businesses, military veterans, clean energy — he repeatedly reminded listeners that the upcoming congressional elections would be their time to decide.

“I hope everybody is going to pay attention and do their homework and find out about candidates,” Obama said at the end of the hour-long event. “And I think what you’ll find is, is that when you’re making choices for governor and you’re making choices for Senate and Congress, that these choices are going to mean something.”

He encouraged people to ask themselves, “What direction do I want this country to go in?”

“Do I want to invest in our people, in our middle class and making it stronger, and our infrastructure and our education system and clean energy — is that one vision,” Obama said, “or are we just going to keep on doing the same things that got us into this mess in the first place?”

His stark portrayal of the stakes in November and his Thursday White House meeting with party leaders comes as polls show likely losses for Democrats, with a possibility they could lose their majority in the House.

Tamiflu May Thwart Pneumonia in ‘Swine Flu’ Patients: Study (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Sept. 28 (HealthDay News) — When taken shortly after
the onset of symptoms, the antiviral drug Tamiflu seems to have protected
otherwise healthy swine flu patients from contracting pneumonia during the
2009 H1N1 pandemic, Chinese researchers say.

Tamiflu may also have shortened the period that patients were
contagious and reduced the duration of their fevers, the research team
said.

However, reporting in the Sept. 29 issue of bmj.com, the study
authors stressed that their findings should be interpreted with caution
given that the conclusions are based on an after-the-fact analysis and on
a pool of patients not uniformly given chest X-rays at the time of
illness.

The study team, led by Dr. Weizhong Yang and Dr. Hongjie Yu from the
Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Beijing, note that in
2009 the fast-spreading influenza A (H1N1) virus killed more than 18,000
people in over 200 countries.

Prior research has suggested that patients who take antiviral
medications within two days of experiencing seasonal flu symptoms may
develop a less severe and shorter-lasting illness and may also reduce
their risk for complications.

To gauge to what degree this might be true for healthy patients with a
mild form of H1N1, the research team reviewed the medical records of
nearly 1,300 Chinese patients diagnosed with the infection in 2009.

The average age of the patients was 20. More than three-quarters were
given Tamiflu within a median of three days following the onset of
symptoms, and 920 of the patients underwent follow-up chest X-rays.

Just 12 percent of those X-rayed had signs of pneumonia, the
researchers observed. None of them needed admission for intensive care,
and none required mechanical ventilation.

Even after accounting for age, gender, influenza vaccine and antibiotic
treatment history, the authors concluded that Tamiflu treatment appeared
to offer significant protection against pneumonia.

This protective effect was apparent in all patients who took Tamiflu,
even those who took it more than 48 hours after symptom onset, but those
who took the medication within 48 hours experienced shorter fevers and
were contagious for a shorter time.

The Chinese team nonetheless called for more follow-up research to
investigate the potential benefits of Tamiflu for swine flu.

House Passes 9/11 Health Care Bill

Link

The home on Wednesday approved legislation to supply billions of dollars for health-related therapy to rescue employees and residents of Ny Metropolis who suffered illnesses from breathing in poisonous fumes, dust and smoke at floor zero.

The vote was 268 to 160, with 13 Republicans joining Democrats in help with the invoice. Republicans raised issues about the $7.4 billion price with the plan.

The bill’s fate is unclear within the Senate. Republicans have sufficient votes to filibuster the measure, and Senate Democrats have not shown fantastic interest in bringing the measure towards the flooring.

The invoice aroused impassioned debate, as 9/11 responders and their relatives watched from the home gallery.

The vote occurred as Congress moved to finish its legislative company rapidly and adjourn this week to permit lawmakers to head back house to campaign prior to the Nov. 2 elections.

The invoice calls for supplying $3.2 billion over the subsequent eight years to watch and treat injuries stemming from exposure to poisonous dust and debris at floor zero. Ny Metropolis would pay 10 percent of individuals well being expenses. The invoice seeks to set aside $4.2 billion to reopen the September 11th Sufferer Compensation Fund to supply compensation for any job and economic losses.

Additionally, the invoice consists of a provision that would have permitted cash in the Sufferer Compensation Fund to be paid out to anybody who receives payment beneath the pending settlement stemming from lawsuits that 10,000 rescue and cleanup employees filed against the metropolis. On the moment, anybody who receives a settlement in the metropolis is restricted in how a lot compensation they can obtain in the fund, in accordance towards the bill’s sponsors.

Till now, Congress has appropriated cash on an annual basis to watch the well being of individuals injured at floor zero and to supply them with health-related therapy.

You will find almost 60,000 individuals enrolled in a selection of well being monitoring and therapy applications associated towards the 9/11 attacks, in accordance towards the sponsors with the invoice. The federal authorities offers the bulk with the cash for individuals well being applications.

The bill’s supporters have been demanding that the authorities institute a much more permanent well being plan for 9/11 responders, fearful that annual appropriations are subject towards the political whims of Congress and also the White Home.

But this kind of a plan has been opposed by several Republicans, who raised issues about making a brand new federal entitlement to supply well being advantages at a time when the federal authorities is running a massive spending budget deficit

Around the flooring, Consultant Joe L. Barton, a Republican from Texas, who opposed the invoice, argued that it was unnecessary given the reality that Congress had produced applications like the Sufferer Compensation Fund.

Following noting that the compensation fund had created billions of dollars in payouts, Mr. Barton mentioned the invoice would add the burden of a brand new entitlement plan on taxpayers. “We want to assist the victims,” he mentioned.

However the bill’s supporters argued that the nation had a moral obligation to assist employees who risked their lives to respond towards the crisis at floor zero.

“The 9/11 responders have received lots of awards and praise, but they tell me that what they truly require is well being care,” mentioned Consultant Carolyn B. Maloney, a Democrat from Ny who was 1 with the bill’s chief sponsors.

Referred to as the James Zadroga 9/11 Well being and Compensation Act, the invoice bears the name of a brand new York Metropolis detective who participated within the rescue and recovery efforts at floor zero for about 3 weeks following the Sept. 11 attack.

He in died in January 2006 following he developed signs typical to initial responders, such as difficulty breathing and flulike signs. However the trigger of his demise became the source of debate following the city’s health-related examiner concluded that his demise was not straight associated towards the 9/11 attacks.

Consultant Lamar Smith, a Republican from Texas, who described the invoice as an ”irresponsible overreach,” seized around the controversy surrounding Mr. Zadroga’s demise, saying: “This invoice is deceptive, beginning with its title.”

The vote on Wednesday was the second time this year that the home took up the 9/11 well being invoice.

In July, Democratic leaders brought the invoice towards the flooring beneath unique guidelines requiring a two-thirds vast majority to pass it. A vast majority with the lawmakers within the chamber supported the invoice, however the vote in July fell brief with the two-thirds margin required.

On the time, Democrats had been concerned that a vote beneath regular guidelines requiring a easy vast majority would have permitted Republicans to propose a controversial modification that sought to deny 9/11 well being advantages to illegal immigrants.

The modification would most likely have divided Democratic help for the original well being invoice into two camps: moderates who may really feel political pressure to deprive illegal immigrants of this kind of advantages and liberals who flatly oppose the Republican modification.

Fort Myers Plantation Shutters

Fort Myers Plantation Shutters

Our Fort Myers plantation shutters go again to the Greeks, where they had been put onto windows within the absence of glass. They had been primarily around the outside, but there’s evidence that there had been wooden shutters around the within too, that is a immediate descendant of our plantation shutters. These would originally have been solid wood, as louvers didn’t arrive till later.

Shutters had been utilized around the globe from antiquity till the contemporary day. They had some thing of a renaissance within the medieval period when European houses utilized each internal and external shutters for privacy and to maintain out the cold. Uses our contemporary plantation shutters nonetheless have these days.

The use with the immediate descendant of plantation shutters incorporating louvers is alleged to arrive through the time of Louis XIV of France. He reigned from 1643 till 1715 and is renowned all through the globe for his influence on furniture and interior style. At the time of his reign, the King lived within the Louvre, Paris, that is now an art gallery and museum. He then moved through the Louvre to Versailles, and as component of that move had some window shutters created by 1 Philip Louvrier. 1 with the myths is that the louvers, or louvres in its right spelling, is named right after the Louvre or Philip Louvrier, the man who initial created them.

An additional myth goes that the original instruction was to produce a window covering that would permit Louis to watch the ladies with the court bathing within the pools with the royal garden with out becoming observed. It apparently irked him that his royal guards did the exact same factor so he had Louvrier style adjustable louvers so they would concentrate on their work. How a lot of this is accurate is debatable but makes a type of sense.

This louvered style created its way over here with the settlers and had been discovered to be perfect for the conditions with the south. They kept out the fierce summer time heat although permitting the cool breeze through the Gulf to enter the plantation houses to cool everybody down. Because then they’ve been adopted throughout the nation even though primarily as a ornamental statement instead of for practical objective.

Whatever the accurate origins of plantation shutters, they’re nonetheless as helpful and as ornamental these days as they had been again then. They nonetheless play a large component within the architecture of Fort Myers, with Naples and several other areas in Florida becoming particularly fond of plantation shutters each within and out. They’re nonetheless well-liked throughout the nation and play a component in even the several contemporary house styles. The various finishes and supplies lend themselves to various styles extremely well, which has helped them endure.

@Task (at task) Project Management

@Task

At Task is the 800 LB gorilla of hosted project management systems, in part because, well – it’s not simply a project management system. It’s more of a complete, software as a service based, run-your-business application.

Nearly everything you need to run the core of your business is on @Task. How big is it? Well… here’s a sample of some of their clients:

  • Apple
  • Adobe
  • CBS
  • HBO

Unfortunately, @Task has a matching price tag (and feature list). Here’s a list of the major features:

Features:

  • Project Management – much like many others in our list of apps, At Task, allows you to manage projects, assign tasks/todos. But, it also includes a nice Gantt Chart for birds-eye views of projects (perfect for larger, multi-step projects).
  • Resource Management – What resources do you have available at your company? How can you best utilize them? What resources are under utilized, or who/what department is being stressed to its limits. Not only can managers see this information, but so can executives.
  • Help Desk - Again, differentiating At Task, from the herds of other PM software out there is their help desk functionality. Although other software can handle these kinds of requests, At Task specifically targets this group, helping your support team track, manage, fix your customers and clients’ problems.
  • Reports & Dashboards – Fancy reports can be found in @task, helping you reveal and uncover actionable information about your business and the way you do business.
  • Much More…

I personally researched @task many years ago while heading an Internet marketing department at a national marketing agency. What interested us in particular was the help desk management – we were fielding many calls/questions, etc. and tracking it’s affects on the business was a nightmare. Clearly we were losing money, but it was hard to tell just how much we needed to increase our prices, or charge for service. Unfortunately, I didn’t stay on long enough to see @Task implemented, although I know it was – and it’s use has since spread throughout the organization. It’s now used as a tool for the entire organization.

@Task from what I recall is price prohibitive. Unfortunately, as of this writing, they STILL don’t publish pricing information on their website (a pet-peeve). However, if your business is running okay, making a lot of money, @Task can be a huge resource. But remember… project management system should always be evaluated by time (time to implement, time saved, etc) and not just on price alone.

Why I Hate AtTask

Okay… i don’t REALLY hate At Task (@task), but I do have some major problems with their site, and the way they do business online… although, with offices all over the world, it doesn’t seem to have affected or slowed their business much. Here’s the list:

  • no online pricing – It’s about to be 2011, ANY company that doesn’t put pricing on their website rings the caution bell of their potential customers.
  • I’m Roger, I represent Business

what is the product? – as more than the casual surfer (remember, I design websites as my day job) I’ve looked at this site in depth – for this review, as well as in evaluating the software in the past. My gripe is… what is your product @task. It’s two things: ONLINE SOFTWARE & CONSULTING! They sell subscriptions to their online software, and they consult with your business on it’s use, and ways to better your business. Both valuable, but horribly presented on the site. It seems each is an after thought to 1) getting your contact information 2) showing you pictures of random “business man.”

Stem cell research can continue during appeal

(CNN) — An appeals court has permanently lifted an injunction imposed by a federal judge, thereby allowing federally funded embryonic stem-cell research to continue while the Obama administration appeals the judge’s original ruling against use of public funds in such research.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit agreed Tuesday to permanently lift the injunction and allow the National Institutes of Health to continue research. The court had temporarily lifted that injunction September 9 pending further consideration.

“President Obama made expansion of stem cell research and the pursuit of groundbreaking treatments and cures a top priority when he took office,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a statement. “We’re heartened that the court will allow NIH and their grantees to continue moving forward while the appeal is resolved.”

District Court Judge Royce Lamberth earlier this month said he would not agree to delay his injunction while the case was appealed.

“Defendants [the government] are incorrect about much of their ‘parade of horribles’ that will supposedly result from this Court’s preliminary injunction,” Lamberth wrote in his court order in early September.

The “horribles” he referred to are an extensive list of research projects outlined by the National Institutes of Health that would have to be shelved if a stay were not granted.

“Congress has mandated that the public interest is served by preventing taxpayer funding of research that entails the destruction of human embryos,” Lamberth said.

“In this court’s view a stay would flout the will of Congress as this court understands what Congress has enacted. … Congress remains perfectly free to amend or revise the statute. This Court is not free to do so,” Lamberth said.

Lamberth’s ruling, which stunned the administration, stopped any further medical research that involves the use of taxpayer dollars to fund projects requiring the destruction of embryos. The appeals court ruling Tuesday allows research to continue during the U.S. Justice Department appeal.

The litigation resulted from a lawsuit against the National Health Institute filed by researchers opposed to use of embryonic stem cells, a group that seeks adoptive parents for human embryos created through in vitro fertilization, the nonprofit Christian Medical Association and others.

When the injunction was first issued by Lamberth in August, Ron Stoddart, executive director of Nightlight Christian Adoptions — one of the groups that filed the lawsuit — said he supported adult stem-cell research that doesn’t require destroying embryos.

“Frequently people will say why are you opposed to stem-cell research and of course our answer is, ‘We’re not,’ ” Stoddart said. “We’re opposed to the destruction of the embryos to get embryo stem cells.”

CNN’s Bill Mears and Phil Gast contributed to this report.

Obama questioned on abortion, religion

Albuquerque, New Mexico (CNN) — An event billed as a discussion on the economy turned personal Tuesday when a woman asked President Barack Obama about his Christian faith and views on abortion.

The question came at a town hall-style meeting in the yard of an Albuquerque home as part of Obama’s public outreach to explain his policies and campaign for Democrats in the November congressional elections.

With a recent survey showing that only a third of Americans can correctly identify Obama as a Christian, the president gave a personal account of his conversion as an adult and how his public service is part of his faith.

“I am a Christian by choice,” Obama began, standing beneath a blazing sun, when asked why he is a Christian.

“I came to my Christian faith later in life, and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead,” Obama said. “Being my brothers’ and sisters’ keeper. Treating others as they would treat me. And I think also understanding that, you know, that Jesus Christ dying for my sins spoke to the humility that we all have to have as human beings.”

Humans are “sinful” and “flawed” beings that make mistakes and “achieve salvation through the grace of God,” the president continued, adding that we also can “see God in other people and do our best to help them find their, you know, their own grace.”

“So that’s what I strive to do,” Obama said. “That’s what I pray to do everyday. I think my public service is part of that effort to express my Christian faith.”

At the same time, Obama emphasized his belief that freedom of religion is “part of the bedrock strength” of the United States.

“This is a country that is still predominantly Christian, but we have Jews, Muslims, Hindus, atheists, agnostics, Buddhists” and others, he said, adding that “their own path to grace is one that we have to revere and respect as much as our own, and that is part of what makes this country what it is.”

The same questioner also asked Obama about regulations on early and late-term abortion, a politically charged issue in the abortion debate.

Obama responded that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare” in America, adding that families — not the government — “should be the ones making the decision.”

Restrictions against late-term abortion are in place now, he said, adding that “people still argue and disagree about it. That’s part of our Democratic tradition.”

On September 19, Obama publicly attended church for the first time in nearly six months when the first family joined the 9 a.m. service at St. John’s Church Lafayette Square, an Episcopal congregation about a block from the White House.

The family sat a few rows from the altar, among roughly 40 worshippers. Each family member received communion, led by the president.

A survey conducted in late July and early August by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that nearly one in five Americans believe Obama is a Muslim, up from around one in 10 Americans who said he was Muslim last year.

The number of Americans who expressed uncertainly about the president’s religion, meanwhile, is much larger and has also grown, including among Obama’s political base. For instance, fewer than half of Democrats and African-Americans now say that Obama is Christian.

According to the Pew survey released last month, most of those who think Obama is Muslim are Republicans, but the number of independents who believe he is Muslim has expanded significantly, from 10 percent last year to 18 percent this summer.

In March 2009, 36 percent of African-Americans said they didn’t know what religion Obama practices. Now, 46 percent of African-Americans say they don’t know, according to the survey.
